FAQ: Percentage Calculation

1. What is a percentage?

A percentage is a way of showing a number out of 100.
For example, 25% means 25 out of every 100.

2. How do I calculate a percentage?

To work out a percentage, divide your number by the total, then multiply by 100. For example, 18 out of 20 as a percentage is (18 ÷ 20) × 100 = 90%.

3. How do I work out a percentage of a number?

Multiply the number by the percentage (as a decimal).
For example, 15% of 40 is 0.15 × 40 = 6.

4. How do I calculate a percentage increase or decrease?

Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value, and multiply by 100.

If the result is positive, it’s a percentage increase; if negative, it’s a percentage decrease. For example:

From 50 to 65: ((65 − 50) ÷ 50) × 100 = 30% increase.
From 80 to 60: ((60 − 80) ÷ 80) × 100 = –25% decrease.
